It's been a winter of moments

Snowless Hiking. There may be deep snow on the ski slopes in the distance, but thereþÄôs very little on the hiking trails this winter. Why not get out and enjoy a sunny, warm day? (Tim Jones/EasternSlopes.com photo)

I hate to sound like a complainer, but it's mid-February and it's warm and raining. ... Yuck!

Like many other winter enthusiasts, Marilyn and I are wishing we could get away to someplace where it's cold and snowing. Colorado? Alberta? New Zealand or Chile in July, anyone?

Seriously, though, so far this has been a winter when you've had to grasp at straws, taking your fun as it comes, wherever and whenever you can. It's been a winter of "moments" rather than a real winter season. There's still time for winter to arrive, but not much. Looking on the bright side, March is, historically, the snowiest month of the year.

The lack of snow and ice is frustrating. My snowshoes are still resting unused in a corner of the attic. Ditto for my Nordic skates. Cross-country skiing has been OK in some places on some days, not others. The only place I've been able to use my backcountry ski gear is skinning up the sides of ski areas.
