คือว่า สมัยที่อยู่ในชนบทและน้ำท่วม จะเห็นแพะ แกะ วัว ควาย รวมทั้งชาวบ้าน ขึ้นมาอาศัย หลบภัยอยู่บนถนน นับว่าเป็นสถานที่แห่งเดียวที่จะได้อาศัยรับข้าวของและการช่วยเหลือจากส่วนที่อยู่ห่างไกล เพื่อจะได้มีของกินของใช้ เป็นเส้นทางหัวใจ ที่บรรดาเหล่าวิศวกรด้านโยธาด้านทางหลวงเขาจะต้อง ใช้วิชาช่างอันพิศดารมาจัดการให้ ผูประสบอุทกภัย เขาได้มีของกินของใช้ อันเนื่องด้วย บางที่รถไฟ เครื่องบิน กระทั่งไฟฟ้าน้ำปะปาก็ไม่มี แม้กระทั่งบางพื้นที่ห่างจากขอบกรุงเทพเพียงสิบยี่สิบกิโลเมตร การกระจายอำนาจ ทั้งความเจริญ เงิน และการบริหารจัดการ การให้ข่าว การประชาสัมพันธ์ จากการบริหารปกครองท้องถิ่นเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ หากที่ใดมีการบริหารจัดการ ใกล้เคียงกับส่วนของปกครองพิเศษเขา ก็จะมีการบริหารจัดการน้ำ ทั้งด้านมวลชนทั้งด้านเทคนิค ด้านเงิน ด้านช่างอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ทำให้ประชาชนในพื้นที่ ลดปัญหาความเดือดร้อนไปได้เร็ว ซึ่งต่อไปในเวลาอันใกล้ เมื่ออาเซียนของเราเปิดเสรีด้านอาชีพวิชาชีพเฉพาะเต็มพิกัดแล้ว อาชีพขาดแคลนของเราจะวิกฤตอย่างหนัก อันด้านแก่ด้านการแพทย์ สาธารณสุข วิศวกร สถาปัตถ์ เหล่านี้เป็นต้น ซึ่งในประเทศที่เจริญแล้ว เขาจะไม่รักษาคนทำงานระดับสมองเหล่านี้ไว้ด้วยส่วยสาอากรอันเกิดจากการทุจริตคอรัปชั่น เพราะ อัจฉริยะระดับสมองของประเทศจะต้องไม่ฉวยโอกาศเอาเปรียบประชาชนที่ลำบากยากจน หรือที่กำลังเผชิญภัยพิบัติ ให้ผู้รับเหมา หรือนายทุนจากบริษัทมหาชนทั้งหลาย หยิบยื่นค่าคอมมิชชั่นที่ไม่ควรรับเกินพิกัดเพื่อส่วนตนหรือองค์กร หรือสัญญาจ้างที่เอาเปรียบจากส่วนต่างภาษีของงบประมาณของประเทศในโครงการต่างๆ กระทั่งฝ่ายการเมืองก็ต้องมีการสร้างสมดุล และโทษบทหนักลงกันทันทีอย่างหนักอย่างเคร่งครัด ในประเทศที่ผู้บริหารทุกระดับมักไปศึกษาดูงาน แล้วกลับมาบ่นอ้อมแอ้มว่าทำไมประเทศที่ว่ามันเจริญกว่าบางประเทศ ที่ทำทีเป็นลดความน่าเชื่อถือของกลุ่มฝ่ายตรงข้ามตัวเองอยู่นั่น แทนที่จะสมานสามัคคีช่วยเหลือประชาชนให้เป็น้ำหนึ่งใจเดียว เวลาไปอิเซนทีฟกันเห็นพร้อมใจกันจัง ไปไหนไปด้วย นายก็ฉลาดเข้าใจชมเชยให้รางวัลอินเซนทีฟประหนึ่งขายสินค้าพวกขายตรงหรือประกัน ที่กำไรเขามากให้อินเซนทีฟไปเที่ยวเมืองนอกกันเหมาลำเครื่องบิน เพราะเรื่องการค้าขายนั้น มีเทคนิคพิเศษมากมาย ที่มีพวกฝูงออคคิวปายไปยืนตะโกนหน้าตลาดบางประเทศ ว่าจะมีหนี้ต่อหัวให้ประชาชนของประเทศไปถึงไหนกัน

ว่ากันเรื่องน้ำแห้งกันต่อ คือว่าเห็นใจชาวบ้านจริงๆ ที่เขาก็อยากให้ระดับน้ำลด เพราะใครๆก็เบื่อ ไม่อยากเป็นผู้อพยพ เร่ร่อนไปมา มีแต่ค่าใช้จ่าย ตอนนี้ติดโรคจากน้ำท่วมท่วมติดเชื้อกันไปทั้งคนทั้งสัตว์ เราไปไหนเป็นที่รังเกียจ ตั้งแต่เป็นโรคฉี่หนูเฮงซวยเนี่ยมาสองอาทิตย์แล้ว ไข้ก็ขึ้นๆลงๆ ไม่ค่อยอยากจะสัมผัสใกล้ชิดใครมาก จะเข้าไปอาศัยในบ้านตนหรือญาติสนิท ก็น้ำท่วมเท่าหัวกันหมด จนต้องใช้น้ำยาสารชีวภาพไปโยนให้น้ำหายเหม็นเน่าไปมั่ง คือเรื่องโลจิสติค เนี่ยสำคัญ กลัวจัง นักวิชาการเก่งๆ ส่วนมากเรื่องมวลชน เรื่องรัฐศาสตร์ นิติศาสตร์ เรื่องสังคม เนี่ย ให้เขามาจับ ไม่ได้ เพราะ เรื่อง เกี่ยวกับมวลชน การทำให้คนจนกลายเป็นคนชั้นกลางชั่นบน มันเป็นเรื่องของนักการเมืองกับพวกกระทรวงมวลชน กระทรวงพวกยุติธรรม ความมั่นคง ปลอดภัย เขา ส่วนนักวิชการสามารถที่มีสมาคม สโมสร สถาบันวิชาชีพ มีพระราชบัญญัติวิชาชีพคุ้มครองและถ่วงดุลจริยธรรมอะไรพวกนี้ เขาจะวางตัวอยู่ในกรอบความรับผิดชอบของเขาสำหรับกฏหมายประเทศนั้นๆ เพราะ พวกเก่งๆ นี้ ต่อไปกลุ่มประเทศในอาเซียนอาจขึ้นค่าจ้างค่าแรง โดนดูดไปทำงานข้ามชาติกัน หมด แล้วจะเหลือนักวิชาชีพผู้เชี่ยวชาญมาทำถนน ทำเขื่อน ทำไฟ ทำสาธารณูปโภคดๆให้เราได้ที่ไหนอีกเล่า ค่าแรงเขาให้เพิ่มจากค่าแรงปัจจุบันไปเท่าสองเท่าสิบเท่าแล้วแต่ความเชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทาง เพราะ การฝึกทักษะอาชีพด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี เป็นศาสตร์ยาก และประเทศที่เจริญ ที่เงินถึง เขาต้องการ สู้ค่าตัวเต็มที่ ไม่มีการเหนี่ยวรั้ง ด้วยอินเซนทีฟ แจกตั๋วไปกลับศึกษาดูงานกันรอบโลกทุกปีเป็นรายบุคคลรายกลุ่มรายคณะเวียนกันอยู่เช่นนั้น คนจนกลุ่มอื่นไม่มีโอกาศได้ใช้เงินภาษีประเทศกันมั่ง ไอ้หน้าเดิมๆคิดเดิมๆ ไปซ้ำซากกันทุกเดือนทุกปี เพราะการจ้างแรงงาน และค่าแรงจากงานใช้แรงงานในต่างแดนเขาไม่มามุ่งเน้นแต่วิชาชีพ ประเทศค่าครองชีพสูง กรรมกร ในระดับมีฝีมือโรงงาน ได้ค่าแรงได้โบนัสเป็นหุ้นราคาแพง แถาค่าแรงต่อชั่วโมง ค่าตัวสูง เป็นกรรมกรก็มีความเป็นอยู่เทียบกับหมอพยาบาลวิศวะได้เหมือนกัน ขอให้ขยันทำงาน ค่าแรงมากขึ้น ถ้าทำงานเสี่ยงภัย งานฝีมือยากๆ ไม่ใช่นึกจะจัดฝึกอบรมสักนิดหน่อยก็อยากให้เรียกเป็นเอกเปิตแล้ว แปลก บางคนเป็น ปราชญ์ชาวบ้าน สะสมมาทั้งชีวิต ในเรื่องศาสตร์เฉพาะ นั้นแหลพภูมิปัญญาทัองถิ่นที่เราต้องถนอมอย่าให้ใครมาเอาภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นเราไปทำเชิงพานิชย์

ไปทั่วเลย เลยอยากให้กำลังใจทุกท่าน กลัวว่านักวิชาการเก่งๆของเราจะถอดใจไปทำงานให้ตลาดอาเซียนเสรีกันหมด ยังต้อง รักษากันไว้ ไม่งั้น งานด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโน แล ด้านศิลปะศิลปิน อันเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ ที่จะนำพาความเจริญ และรายได้ แลดำรงความเป็นชาติของเราจะไปกันหมด จะย้ายถ่ายเทกันไปหมด เป็นแรงงานมีฝีมือข้ามชาติ เพราะอนาคตเร็วนี้ การถ่ายโอนอำนาจด้านมวลชนด้านการเมือง คงต้องมีการบริหารจัดการอย่างยอดเยี่ยม เพื่อไม่ให้เกิดภัยพิบัติซ้ำซากแกมวลชน การบริหารจัดการทุกภิกภัย สาธารณภัย ยังต้องอาศัยความรู้ความสามารถจากผู้ที่เก่งกล้าด้านเทคนิค วิชาการ เทคโนโลยี อีกทั้งการจรรโลงจิตใจให้ฝ่ดีใฝ่อาสาจากนักศาสตร์สิลปะทั้งหลายต้องช่วยกันด้วย เราไม่ใช่อนารยะชน โลกอินเตอร์เนทของเราแลข้อมูลข่าวสารอันถูกต้องจำเป็น ยังต้องอาศัย พวกเรากระทรวงมวลชน ชาวสารณูปโภคให้ทุกข์ภัยแก่พี่น้องของเราได้บรรเทาไปโดยเร็ว บางเรื่องต้องชัดเจน บอกไปว่าเพื่อประโยชน์ส่วนรวมที่เป็นเป็นธรรม คืออะไร เหมือนคราวที่ดูพวกที่เกิดปัญหาจลาจล ตามเกาะมหาอำนาจ เขาจะมีหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ชัด รุ่งขึ้น รวยตัวการได้หมดสิ้น ไม่ต้องให้สื่อมวลชนมาเสนอข้อมูล ถามแปลกๆ แบบ มีกฏหมายไว้หลังกฏหมู่อะไรแบบนี้ อย่างบางประเทศ แสดงว่า กฏหมายมหาชนเขาสำคัญมาก ส่วนกฏหมายอาญาเรื่องความผิดส่วนตัว กับเรื่องสิทธิมนุษยชนยอดเยี่ยม รู้สิทธิรู้หน้าที่ของทั้งผู้ที่อยู่ใต้กฏหมาย และการใช้กฏหมายอย่างดีเยี่ยม ไม่ใช่เอาผู้เยาว์นำหน้าทำผิดอาญาต่อภาครัฐ ผู้ใหญ่ชี้บงการ มีรูปมีภาพเคลื่อนไหวชัด ให้สำนักข่าวต่างประเทศไปประโคมอยู่ทั่วโลก ลดความน่าเชื่อถือกันทำไม เราต้องการมีรายได้จากทุกภาคส่วน ไม่ใช่ต้องการเป็นหนี้ทุกภาคส่วนนะ

วันนี้ ( 1 ก.ย.) ที่หอศิลปวัฒธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร นายอานันท์ ปันยารชุน ประธานกรรมการปฏิรูป กล่าวเปิดงาน " 20 ปี 20 วันสืบ นาคะเสถียร" จัดโดยมูลนิธิสืบ นาคะเสถียร ตอนหนึ่งว่า 20 ปีที่แล้วสืบ นาคะเสถียร ได้พยายามนำเสนอประเด็นในเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อม ป่าไม้ และสัตว์ป่า ผ่านสื่อและเวทีต่างๆ เพื่อให้สังคมได้รับรู้ แต่ไม่มีใครสนใจ เพราะมองว่าเป็นเรื่องไกลตัว แต่ทุกวันนี้ทุกคนรู้แล้วว่าประเด็นสิ่งแวดล้อมและทรัพยากรเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ ที่ส่งผลให้เกิดความขัดแย้งในสังคมไทยอย่างที่เป็นอยู่ ทั้งนี้ "สืบ"อยู่ในระบบราชการและพยายามทำตามระบบซึ่งเป็นระบบที่ไม่มีการเปลี่ยน แปลง และเป็นระบบที่ยึดติดกับอำนาจ เงินทุน และกฎหมาย ซึ่งหลายครั้งที่กฎหมายถูกใช้อย่างไม่ตรงตามเจตนารมณ์และเกิดผลกระทบตามมา อย่างมาก ระบบราชการของเรายังล้าหลัง จึงต้องมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงและปฎิรูป วันนี้เราพูดถึงการกระจายอำนาจ แต่เป็นการกระจายอำนาจจากหน่วยราชการส่วนกลางไปยังหน่วยราชการส่วนภูมิภาค เท่านั้น อย่างไรก็ตามการกระจายอำนาจหมายถึงการกระจายสิทธิไปยังชุมชนและเรื่องนี้ไม่ ใช่การทำทาน แต่ถือเป็นสิทธิที่ต้องให้ประชาชนเพราะเขามีอำนาจในการขอพื้นที่ทางการเมือง พื้นที่ความเป็นธรรม เพื่อลดความเหลื่อมล้ำของสังคมไทย

"ถ้าเราไม่เปลี่ยนวิธีคิดเรื่องนี้อีก 20 ข้างหน้าก็ยังต้องพูดเรื่องเดิมอีก ผมหวังว่าเราจะไม่ปล่อยให้ "สืบ"ต้องเดียวดายทุกคนต้องตระหนักเสมอว่าเวลาในชีวิตที่เหลือยู่นี้ เราต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงวิธีคิดของสังคมไทย สิ่งที่ต้องทำคือการเปลี่ยนแปลงอำนาจของระบบราชการกับประชาชน อำนาจเงินทุนกับประชาชน อำนาจระหว่างผู้บริหารกับประชาชนและ อำนาจระหว่างประชาชนด้วยกันเอง ซึ่งเรื่องนี้ต้องไม่พูดเพ้อแสดงความฝันเท่านั้น แต่ต้องทำให้เกิดขึ้นจริงในสังคมไทยให้ได้" นายอานันท์ กล่าว

ใครๆในโลกเขาก็พยายามพัฒนาบ้านเมืองให้เป็นที่รักของนักท่องเที่ยวกันทั้ง นั้น มีอุปสรรคอันใดเขาก็ร่วมมือกันแก้ไขเป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวทั้งภูมิภาค ไม่ใช่บางภูมิภาค พอประเทศไหนเจอวิกฤต รีบฉวยเอานักท่องเที่ยวนักธุรกิจนักลงทุน เข้าประเทศตัวเองจนหมดสิ้น จะให้ทำตัวเป็นนักพัฒนารุ่นเก่าที่ประนามประเทศเพื่อนบ้านไม่ได้อีกแล้ว ไม่ดีต่อการต่างประเทศ พวกบลูพรินตในฝันเขายิ่งอยากให้มีเขตเศรษฐกิจเก๊ๆขึ้นมาให้จงได้ ภายในเวลาปีนั้นปีนี้ อ้างว่าเพื่อประโยชน์ของประชาชนอะไรแบบนี้ไม่ใช่ประโยชน์ของนักธุกิจการ เมืองเสียหน่อย แต่ก็ มีแต่บางประเทศเนี่ย ผลัดกันใช้มือของฝ่ายตรงข้ามและผู้ใช้งบประมาณบ้านเมืองในสมัยนั้นๆทำลาย แหล่งเงินแหล่งทุนของนักการเมืองฝ่ายตรงข้ามกันอยู่นั่นแหละ ผลัดกันไปมาทุกปี แต่นักธุรกิจการเมืองของบางประเทศไม่เคยเข็ด เพราะเวลาได้กำไรปันผลต่อหุ้นไม่เคยต้องแบ่งให้กระทรวงการคลังมาพัฒนาบ้าน เมืองแบบเต็มๆ เพราะจ่ายเงินให้นักการเมืองที่ใช้ธุรกิจการเมืองหากินบนน้ำตาข้าราชการราย ได้ต่ำและพวกคนจนในประเทศ ได้เงินที่ปันผลในตลาดทุนหรือขายให้ใครtake over ได้กำไรดี้ดีไปได้ผ่านการแสวงหาโอกาศทางการเมืองเสร็จก็ไปเสวยสุขอยู่บน อวกาศได้แล้ว แผ่นดินบนโลกไม่มีให้อยู่ก็ช่างมัน ประเทศอะไรนะเนี่ย ชอบทะเลจัง แม้ไปอยู่จะตัวดำตัวอ้วนกินดีอยู่ดี แต่ก็ชอบ ตอนเด็กๆนะ ตอนนี้แก่แล้วกลัวผิวเหี่ยว

Jiegu, China (CNN) -- Rescuers prepared to airlift hundreds of injured people Thursday from the earthquake zone to hospitals as the massive rescue effort continued in China.
The death toll for Wednesday's 6.9-magnitude quake rose to 617, state-run CCTV reported. More than 9,000 people had been injured and 313 were missing.
The rescue effort was hampered by unstable bridges and collapsed roadways, making it difficult for heavy equipment to get to hard-hit areas like Jiegu, the town nearest the epicenter.
New Delhi, India (CNN) -- A short-lived but violent storm has killed 122 people in eastern India, officials said Thursday.
About 300,000 homes were damaged in the storm that cut a deadly path through parts of India's West Bengal and Bihar states early Wednesday, officials said.

ก๋วยเตี๋ยว เรือเนื้อที่บางใหญ่ปากซอยชั้นบนข้างลานสเกตกับข้างปั้มปอตอทอขาเข้าจาก สุพรรณปากซอยที่บ้านก็อร่อยดี เขาว่ามีเจ้าแรกขายที่ปากซอยหมู่บ้านบัวทองด้วย กินในห้างร้านชามเล็กชามใหญ่อิ่มหน่อยก็สามสิบห้าบาทให้ค่าที่ค่ายี่ห้อเขา ด้วย เพราะเขารับประกันความอร่อย

แต่พวกขายอย่างอื่นในห้างนี้ทำท่าจะสลบกันหมด โรงหนัง มือถือ เสื้อผ้า ของกิน ของขาย หนังสือ

ความที่นโยบายประเทศชาติมันเอาแน่ไม่ได้

พวก เอกชนเขาก็อยากได้กำไรเยอะๆ โดยเฉพาะพวกลงทุนตัวใหญ่ที่กะฟันขายเอากำไรแล้วเผ่น ทิ้งภาระไว้ให้ผู้ค้าขายผู้อาศัยในย่านที่รอรถไฟฟ้าการคมนาคมสื่อสารยอด เยี่ยม รอกันจนทุนหายกำไรหด ปิดร้านหนีผีหลอกไปหาทำเลใหม่ให้มันไกลไปจาก รถไฟฟ้าบางใหญ่บางซื่อ ให้ไกลแสนไกล

จะได้ลืมๆไปบ้างกับถ้อยคำสัญญาหลอกลวงของภาครัฐทุกสมัย

ส่วน พวกที่เข้ามาอยู่อาศัยก็เฝ้าแต่รอว่าอีกหน่อยองค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลกับ เทศบาลคงพัฒนาศักยภาพเทียบเงินเทียบช่างเทียบครูเทียบโรงพยาบาลอะไรต่อมิ อะไรเท่ากับเขตปกครองพิเศษกะเขาเสียที

รออยู่แหละเห็นเสารถไฟฟ้าขึ้นตรงปากซอยรางๆแล้ว

เพราะคนมาหาถามที่อยู่ที่ขายของเยอะขึ้น

รถวิ่งอยู่หน้าบ้านแบบซุปเปอรไฮเวยเลยตอนนี้เยอะมากสิบหกล้อกับรถบัสรถทัวสวิ่งกันตลบ

ส่วนถนนในฝันที่นายเพิ่งย้ายไป เฝ้าประตูออกไปพม่าเมื่อเดือนก่อนก็ทำท่าจะเป็นหมันอีก สงสัยจะยาก กะจะขับรถเที่ยวจากบางใหญ่ไปกาญจนบุรีและมุ่งไปท่าเรือทวายตะนาวทางพม่าโน่น

เพราะน้องหนุ่มหล่อชาวพม่าคราวที่แล้วล้วนแต่น่ารักเป็นอันมาก

ก็ยังคิดถึงอยู่

ป้าๆอยากไปเยี่ยมหาแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมน่ะ

ส่วนทางกัมพูชานั้นประสาเพื่อนบ้านและมนุษยธรรมค้ำจุนโลก ก็ต้องพยายามสมานฉันท ก็ยังคิดถึงผู้ที่เคยมาอบรมทุกท่าน รวมทั้งหมู่บ้านและถนนทั้งหลายที่ชาวไทยช่วยกันไปแล้วทั้ง๔๘และ๖๗ เพราะเรามีการค้าเสรีกันแล้ว ถ้าเราไม่รักไม่ค้าขายแลกเปลี่ยนกัน พวกภูมิภาคอื่นเขาก็จะชิงตลาดเราไปหมดสิ้น อาเซี่ยนเราต้องรักกันมากๆ

ก็หวังไปต่างๆนานาว่าจะมีรถไฟฟ้าใช้เหมือนบ้านลูกบ้าง

เพราะสุขุมวิทก็บ้าไปพักนึงกว่ารถไฟฟ้าจะเสร็จ

เมืองนนทบุรี มี ความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนานกว่า 400 ปี ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา มีคูคลองน้อยใหญ่มากมาย เป็นเมืองเก่าแก่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี เดิมตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลบ้านตลาดขวัญ ซึ่งเป็นสวนผลไม้ที่ขึ้นชื่อในสมัยนั้น ได้รับการยกฐานะเป็นเมืองนนทบุรีเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2092 ในรัชกาลสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ บ้านตลาดขวัญเป็นดินแดนแห่งความอุดม สมบูรณ์และเป็นสวนผลไม้ที่มีชื่อแห่งหนึ่งของกรุงศรีอยุธยา ฝรั่งต่างชาติที่ได้เดินทางเข้ามาค้าขายและเจริญสัมพันธไมตรีกับกรุง ศรีอยุธยาต่างก็ได้บันทึกเอาไว้ ดังปรากฏในจดหมายเหตุบันทึกการเดินทางของลาลูแบร์ ชาวฝรั่งเศสผู้ซึ่งเดินทางเข้ามาในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชว่า “สวนผลไม้ที่บางกอกนั้น (หมายถึงกรุงเทพฯ ในปัจจุบัน) มีอาณาบริเวณยาวไปตามชายฝั่ง โดยทวนขึ้นสู่เมืองสยามถึง 4 ลี้ กระทั่งจรดตลาดขวัญ (TALACOUN) ทำให้เมืองหลวงแห่งนี้อุดมสมบูรณ์ไปด้วยผลาหาร ซึ่งคนพื้นเมืองชอบบริโภคกันนักหนา” (จดหมายเหตุลาลูแบร์)

ปี พ.ศ. 2179 พระเจ้าปราสาททองโปรดเกล้าฯให้ขุดคลองลัดตอนใต้วัดท้ายเมืองไปทะลุวัด เขมา เพราะเดิมนั้นแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาไหลวกเข้าแม่น้ำอ้อมมาทางบางใหญ่วกเข้า คลองบางกรวยข้างวัดชลอ มาออกหน้าวัดเขมา เมื่อขุดคลองลัดแล้ว แม่น้ำก็เปลี่ยนทางเดินไหลเข้าคลองลัดที่ขุดใหม่ กลายเป็นแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ใหม่ดังปัจจุบันนี้ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2208 สมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชทรงเห็นว่า แม่น้ำเปลี่ยนทางเดินใหม่นั้น ทำให้ข้าศึกประชิดพระนครได้ง่าย จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างป้อมปราการตรงปากแม่น้ำอ้อม และโปรดเกล้าฯให้ย้ายเมืองนนทบุรีมา อยู่ปากแม่น้ำอ้อมด้วย ดังมีศาลหลักเมืองปรากฏอยู่ นอกจากป้อมที่ปากแม่น้ำอ้อมแล้วเข้าใจว่าในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาคงจะได้มีการ สร้างป้อมไม้เอาไว้ที่บริเวณวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติในปัจจุบัน เพราะปรากฏหลักฐานจากจดหมายเหตุรายวันของบาทหลวง เดอ ชัวซีย์ ผู้ซึ่งเดินทางร่วมมากับคณะราชทูตของพระเจ้าหลุยส์ที่ 14 ที่เข้ามาเจริญทางพระราชไมตรี ในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชเมื่อ พ.ศ.2228 ว่า “เช้าวันนี้เราผ่านป้อมที่ทำด้วยไม้ 2 ป้อม ป้อมหนึ่ง ยิงปืนเป็นการคำนับ 10 นัด อีกป้อมหนึ่ง 8 นัด ที่มีแต่ปืนครกเท่านั้น ดินปืนดีมากทีเดียว ป้อมทางขวามือเรียกป้อมแก้ว และป้อมทางซ้ายมือเรียกป้อมทับทิม ณ ที่นี้เจ้าเมืองบางกอกก็กล่าวคำอำลาและอ้างเหตุว่าได้ควบคุมเรือขบวนมาส่งจน สุดแดนที่อยู่ในความปกครองของเมืองบางกอกแล้ว แล้วก็ลาท่านราชทูตกลับไป

และในปี พ.ศ. 2230 เมื่อลาลูแบร์เป็นราชทูตเข้ามากรุงศรีอยุธยา ก็ได้กล่าวถึงป้อมไม้แห่งนี้ไว้ด้วย โดยที่เขียนเป็นแผนที่เอาไว้อย่างชัดเจนตามหลักฐานดังกล่าว จึงเข้าใจว่าป้อมแก้วคงตั้งอยู่ ณ บริเวณตลาดแก้ว ส่วนป้อมทับทิมเข้าใจว่าคงตั้งอยู่ ณ บริเวณหน้าวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติในปัจจุบัน

ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 แห่ง กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ โปรดเกล้าฯให้ย้ายเมืองนนทบุรีไปตั้งที่ปากคลองบางซื่อบ้านตลาดขวัญ และในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตั้งศาลากลางเมืองขึ้นที่ปากคลองบางซื่อ ฝั่งซ้ายของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2471 รัชกาลที่ 7 ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายศาลากลางมาตั้งที่ราชวิทยาลัย บ้านบางขวาง ตำบลบางตะนาวศรี ปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งกองฝึกอบรมกระทรวงมหาดไทยตั้งอยู่บนถนนประชาราษฎร์ สาย 1 อำเภอเมือง ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ตัวอาคารเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมแบบยุโรปตามอาคารประดับด้วยไม้ฉลุ ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา กรมศิลปากรได้ขึ้นบัญชีเป็นโบราณสถานแห่งหนึ่ง และในปัจจุบันศาลากลางจังหวัดนนทบุรีได้ย้ายที่ทำการมาอยู่ที่ถนนรัตนาธิเบศร์

วัดในจังหวัดนนทบุรี องค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดนนทบุรี จัดทำขึ้นรวม 189 วัด ในปี 2550 และเพิ่มเป็น 190 วัด คือวัดบรมราชากาญจนาภิเษกอนุสรณ์(วัดโพธิ์ทอง) คณะสงฆ์จีนนิกายรังสรรค์ (นามพระราชทาน) มีพระคณาจารย์จีนธรรมปัญญาจริยาภรณ์ (พระอาจารย์เย็นเชี้ยว). เจ้าอาวาสวัดเล่งเนยยี่เป็นองค์อุปถัมภ์ ในปี 2551

วัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติ พระอารามหลวงชั้นโท ชนิดวรวิหาร ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ ๘๖ ถ.ท่าน้ำนนท์-วัดโบสถ์ดอนพรหม ต.บางศรีเมือง อ.เมือง นนทบุรี ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาฝั่งตะวันตกเยื้องศาลากลางจังหวัด (หลังเก่า)ไปทางทิศเหนือประมาณ ๑ กม. ตั้งวัดเมื่อ ๒๓๙๐ เป็นวัดที่มีความสำคัญคู่บ้านคู่เมือง วัดอยู่ในเขตป้อมเก่า รัชกาลที่ ๓ ให้พระยาคลัง(ดิศ บุนนาค) เป็นแม่กองสร้าง เป็นการถวายพระเกียรติ พระอัยการพระวัยก์ และสมเด็จพระชนนี แห่งพระองค์ สร้างวัดยังไม่เสร็จ โปรดให้พระยาทิพกรวงศ์ (นำ บุญนาค) ต่อมารัชกาลที่ ๔ ทรงรับพระราชภารกิจในการสร้างวัดจนแล้วเสร็จ ภายในวัดมีพระอุโบสถสร้างด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมแบบไทยปนจีน ด้านในประดิษฐานพระประธานปางมารวิชัย หล่อด้วยทองแดงทั้งองค์ หน้าตักกว้าง 6 ศอก สูงจรดเศียร 8 ศอก 2 คืบ 4 นิ้ว พระนามว่า "พระพุทธมหาโลกาภินันทปฎิมา" ในพระวิหารขวา ประดิษฐาน “พระศิลาขาว” พระการเปรียญหลวง(ซ้าย) ประดิษฐาน “พระพุทธปฏิมากรชัยวัฒน์” และพระมหาเจดีย์ เจ้าอาวาสพระอารามหลวง และเป็นเจ้าคณะจังหวัดนนทบุรีฝ่ายมหานิกาย พระธรรมกิตติมุนี (ฐานมงฺคโล สาย ศรีมงคล) เกิด ๒๒ พ.ย. ๒๔๗๖ อุปสมบท ๑๙ เม.ย. ๒๔๙๗ เจ้าอาวาสและเจ้าคณะจังหวัดเมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๕๒๘
วัดนี้ได้รับรางวัลอาคารอนุรักษ์ดีเด่นประจำปีพ.ศ. ๒๕๓๖ จากสมาคมสถาปนิกสยาม สถาปัตยกรรมในวัดที่น่าสนใจได้แก่ พระอุโบสถ เป็นศิลปะแบบพระราชนิยมในรัชกาลที่ ๓ (คือ ศิลปะที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากจีนมาผสม) หลังคามุงด้วยกระเบื้องรางดินเผาชนิดกาบกล้วยไม่เคลือบสี ถือปูนทับแนวทำเป็นลอนลูกฟูกแบบเก๋งจีน หน้าบันประดับด้วยกระเบื้องเคลือบสี สลับลวดลายใบดอกพุดตาน กระจังฐานพระ ช่อฟ้าใบระกา ประดับด้วยกระเบื้องเคลือบสีสลับลายจากประเทศจีน ผนังด้านในเขียนสีลายพุ่มข้าวบิณฑ์ก้านแย่ง มีช่อดอกพุดตานภายใน เพดานลายฉลุปิดทอง ซุ้ม ประตูหน้าต่างประดับลายปูนปั้นรูปใบและดอกพุดตาน พื้นประดับกระจก
ผนังภายในพระอุโบสถเขียนสีลายดอกไม้ร่วง บานประตูหน้าต่างเขียนลายทองรดน้ำ กรอบประตูหน้าต่างประดับปูนปั้นยกดอกพุดตาน พื้นประดับกระจกส่วนด้านในของบานประตูหน้าต่างเขียนรูปกอบัว ดอกบัว นก และสัตว์น้ำ
พระประธานในพระอุโบสถวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติเป็นพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัย หล่อด้วยทองแดงทั้งองค์ มีตำนานเล่าว่า ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 โปรดเกล้าฯให้ขุดแร่ทองแดงที่อำเภอจัณทึก จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ได้แร่ถลุงเป็นเนื้อทองแดงมาก พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชประสงค์จะใช้ทองแดงนั้นให้เป็น ประโยชน์เกื้อกูลแก่พระพุทธศาสนาก่อน จึงโปรดเกล้าฯให้หล่อพระพุทธรูปซึ่งประดิษฐานเป็นพระประธานในพระอาราม ซึ่งทรงสร้างใหม่ ๒ พระอาราม คือ วัดราชนัดดากับวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติ และยังได้โปรดเกล้าฯให้หล่อพระพุทธรูปปางอื่นอีก ๓๔ ปางด้วย พระประธานนี้หล่อเสร็จเรียบร้อยเมื่อพ.ศ.๒๓๘๙ เฉพาะที่อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานที่วัดราชนัดดานั้น เวลาชักเคลื่อนองค์พระไปวัดเกิดอาเพศ ตะเฆ่ (เครื่องลากเข็นของหนัก รูปเตี้ยๆ มีล้อ) ประดิษฐานพระไปทับเอาเจ้าพระยายมราช (บุญนาค) กับทนายอีก ๒ คน ตาย เมื่อถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๔ พระองค์ถวายพระนามพระประธานว่า “พระพุทธมหาโลกาภินันทปฏิมา”
ภายในพระวิหารหลวง หรือเรียกกันว่า วิหารพระศิลาขาว อยู่ด้านทิศใต้ของพระอุโบสถประดิษฐานพระประธานศิลา พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯให้อัญเชิญมาเมื่อพ.ศ. ๒๔๐๑ เป็นพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัย พร้อมด้วยพระอัครสาวกซ้ายขวาเป็นพระศิลานั่งพับเพียบซึ่งปัจจุบันเหลืออยู่ เพียงองค์เดียว พระเจดีย์ อยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของพระอุโบสถ เป็นเจดีย์ทรงกลมหรือทรงระฆัง มักเรียกกันว่า ทรงลังกา เนื่องจากได้รับแบบอย่างมาจากลังกา พร้อมกับการเผยแพร่เข้ามาของพุทธศาสนาลัทธิลังกาวงศ์ มีฐานแปดเหลี่ยมสองชั้นสูง ๔๕ เมตร ภายในบรรจุพระบรมธาตุ
ยังมีถาวรวัตถุอื่นที่สำคัญ เช่น การเปรียญหลวง อาคารแบบผสมระหว่างอาคารทรงไทยกับเครื่องบนหลังคาแบบจีน ลักษณะเป็นตึกทรงโรงมีเสาอยู่ข้างใน ภายในประดิษฐานพระพุทธปฏิมากรชัยวัฒน์ ซึ่งหาชมได้ยาก นอกจากนี้ยังมี กุฏิทรงไทย อยู่ด้านเหนือเขตพุทธาวาสจำนวน ๒๐ หลัง เป็นเรือนไทยภาคกลางใต้ถุนสูง กำแพงแก้วและป้อมปราการ เป็นกำแพงก่ออิฐถือปูน มีใบเสมาเหมือนกับกำแพงพระบรมมหาราชวัง มีป้อมปราการทั้งสี่มุม มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ และพระศรีมหาโพธิ์ ต้นโพธิ์พันธุ์พุทธคยาที่ได้มาสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๔
การเดินทาง
รถยนต์ เข้าไปตามถนนบางกรวย-ไทรน้อยแล้วเลี้ยวเข้าท่าน้ำนนทบุรี(ฝั่งธนบุรี) จะมีป้ายบอกทางตลอด หากมาจากฝั่งกรุงเทพฯข้ามสะพานพระราม ๕ แล้วแยกเข้าถนนบางกรวย–ไทรน้อย หรือข้ามจากสะพานพระนั่งเกล้า ถึงแยกบางพลู เลี้ยวซ้ายผ่านวัดสวนแก้ว ขับไปตามทางมีป้ายบอกทางเช่นกัน
เรือ นั่งเรือด่วนเจ้าพระยาไปยังท่าน้ำนนทบุรีแล้วลงเรือหางยาวประจำเส้นทางไป คลองบางใหญ่ ออกจากท่าน้ำนนทบุรีทุก ๒๐ นาที ใช้เวลาเดินทางประมาณ ๕ นาที
รถโดยสารประจำทาง ขึ้นรถโดยสารประจำทางหรือรถสองแถวจากท่าน้ำนนทบุรี (ฝั่งธนบุรี)

วัดชลอ ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ ๓๓ ถ.บางกรวย-ไทรน้อย ม.๓ ต.วัดชลอ อ.บางกรวย นนทบุรี ตั้งวัดเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๐๘๑ พระอุโบสถหลังเก่าอายุกว่า ๔๕๐ ปี แบบเรือสำเภา ขึ้นทะเบียนโบราณสถาน ๒๕๑๓ ได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาเมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๓๑๒ วัดนี้มีประวัติความเป็นมาตั้งแต่ครั้งสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรมโกษฐ์ได้ทรงเสด็จทางชลมารคมาตามลำน้ำเจ้า พระยาผ่านจังหวัดนนทบุรีเรื่อยมาทางคลอง “ ลัด” ในปัจจุบันเรียกว่า “คลองบางกรวย” พระองค์ทรงเห็นว่า ที่ตรงนี้น่าจะมีการสร้างวัดขึ้นมาสักวัดหนึ่ง แต่เนื่องจากบริเวณนั้นในอดีตเคยมีเรือสำเภาจากเมืองจีนล่มและจมลง มีลูกเรือล้มตายมาก มีความเชื่อว่าเป็นที่อาถรรพ์ ในระหว่างการก่อสร้างก็มีอุปสรรคนานัปการ จึงทรงเสี่ยงสัตยาธิษฐานกับเทพยดาและมีพระสุบินนิมิตไปว่า ชายจีนชรามากราบทูลว่า ต้องสร้างโบสถ์เป็นรูปเรือสำเภาเพื่อการแก้เคล็ด จึงทรงสร้างโบสถ์เป็นรูปเรือสำเภา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรมโกษฐ์ได้ทรงพระราชทานนามวัดดังกล่าวว่า” วัดชลอ” วัดชลอถูกปล่อยให้รกร้างว่างเปล่ามาโดยตลอดเพิ่งจะมีพระภิกษุมาจำพรรษาใน รัชกาลที่ ๓ หรือ รัชกาลที่ ๔ สิ่งที่น่าชมในวัดนี้คือ โบสถ์เรือหงส์ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก เริ่มก่อสร้างในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๖ โดยหลวงพ่อวัดชลอหรือท่านพระครูนนทปัญญาวิมล ได้เล่าถึงนิมิตรเห็นเรือหงส์ลอยมาอยู่หน้าโบสถ์หลังเก่า (โบสถ์ที่มีลักษณะเหมือนเรือสำเภา) จึงได้เริ่มลงมือก่อสร้าง เจ้าอาวาส พระครูปลัด ทนงค์ ฐิตรํสี(ธรรมศูนย์) อุปสมบท ๒๐ ก.ค. ๒๕๑๕ สอบถามเพิ่มเติมได้ที่ โทร. ๐๒-๔๔๗-๕๑๒๑, ๐๒-๘๘๓-๙๒๗๗

วัดปราสาท ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ ๑๘ ถ.บางกรวย-ไทรน้อย ม.๔ ต.บางกร่าง อ.เมือง นนทบุรี เจ้าอาวาส พระครูวิสุทธิจริยาภิวัฒน์(วิมโล ฉลาด สดมุ้ย) อุปสมบทเมื่อ ๒๕ พ.ย.๒๕๑๕ ตั้งวัดประมาณ พ.ศ.๒๓๐๐ เป็นวัดเก่าแก่อายุกว่า ๒๕๐ ปี เป็นวัดร้างหลังเสียกรุง สร้างขึ้นใหม่ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๒ ภายในโบสถ์มีจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่ควรศึกษา พระประธานเก่าแก่มีรูปทรงโค้งคล้ายเรือ มีกำแพงแก้ว สองชั้นซึ่งมีร่องรอยให้ศึกษาได้ ปัจจุบันทรุดโทรมมากแล้ว ทางวัดกำลังวางแผนบูรณะซ่อมแซมสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย สร้างในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช หน้าบันพระอุโบสถเป็นไม้สักสลักรูปนารายณ์ทรงครุฑ (ปัจจุบันตัวครุฑถูกขโมยไปแล้ว) เครื่องบนเป็นไม้สักประดับด้วยรวยมอญ (ตัวไม้แกะสลักที่ทอดตัวลงมาบนหัวแปตอนหน้าจั่ว เป็นศิลปะมอญ) ตรงหุ่นนก (สามเหลี่ยม ข้างรวยมอญ) เป็นรูปราชสีห์และคชสีห์ ลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมเป็นโบสถ์แบบมหาอุดไม่มีการเจาะฝาผนังเลย ฐานพระอุโบสถเป็นแบบตกท้องช้างหรือท้องสำเภา (การสร้างโบสถ์แบบตกท้องช้างนั้น สามารถอธิบายได้ด้วยเหตุผลทางสถาปัตยกรรม คือเมื่ออากาศร้อน ความร้อนจะลอยตัวขึ้นสูงอากาศเย็นจะพัดเข้าแทนที่ได้สะดวก) ภายในพระอุโบสถประดิษฐานพระประธานและพระสาวก มีภาพจิตรกรรมเขียนขึ้นในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลายโดยฝีมือของสกุลช่างชั้นสูง นนทบุรี เรียกว่าทศชาติชาดก นับว่าเป็นภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดของจังหวัดนนทบุรี ถือว่าวัดนี้เป็นวัดหนึ่ง ที่ดำเนินการอนุรักษ์โบสถ์และศิลปกรรมได้อย่างถูกวิธี จึงทำให้เป็นแหล่งวิทยาการที่น่าสนใจยิ่งของทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ บนศาลาการเปรียญยังมีธรรมาสน์ที่มีอายุเก่าแก่พอกับโบสถ์ ประดับลวดลายตกแต่งอย่างสวยงาม วัดนี้จึงได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นวัดที่มีการอนุรักษ์ศิลปกรรมได้อย่างถูก ต้อง เป็นที่เชิดหน้าชูตา
"อุโบสถวัดปราสาท" เป็นอุโบสถสมัยอยุธยาตอนกลาง และเป็นแบบมหาอุด คือผนังด้านข้างไม่มีหน้าต่าง มีเพียงหน้าต่างเล็กตรงผนังด้านหลังพระประธานอย่างเดียว อุโบสถหันหน้าสู่ทิศตะวันออก เป็นอุโบสถแบบมีช่อฟ้า ใบระกา มีทวย มีหน้าบันจำหลักไม้ มีลายจำหลักไม้ดาวเพดานที่หน้ามุข...

วัดไผ่เหลือง(บางรักพัฒนา) ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ ๔๑/๑ ถ.รัตนาธิเบรศ์ ม.๔ ต.บางรักพัฒนา อ.บางบัวทอง นนทบุรี ตั้งวัดเมื่อ ๓๐ ก.ค.๒๕๒๘ ได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาเมื่อ ๑ ก.พ.๒๕๓๓ เจ้าอาวาส พระมหาอนุชาติ อนุภทฺโท(พันธุ์วิทยากูล) อุปสมบทเมื่อ ๙ พ.ค.๒๕๓๘

วัดโปรดเกษ ตั้งอยู่เลขที่ ๗๔ คลองพระอุดม ม.๒ ต.คลองพระอุดม อ.ปากเกร็ด นนทบุรี ตั้งวัดเมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๓๑๗ ได้รับพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาเมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๓๑๗ เจ้าอาวาส พระสมุห์ผิน ชินวโร(กล่ำโทก) อุปสมบทเมื่อ ๕ เม.ย.๒๕๐๐

Haiti Earthquake Disaster Little Surprise to Some Seismologists

Although seismic predictions work on geologic timescales and can miss big quakes by decades, one expert said last week that a temblor in Port-au-Prince was of greater concern than a San Andreas slip

COMBINATION FORCES: The combination of a large fault ready to rupture and a poor--and poorly prepared--area can lead to wide devastation when an earthquake strikes. This was one of the reasons one expert has been even more worried about cities like Port-au-Prince than Los Angeles.

The devastating magnitude 7.0 quake that ripped through Haiti Tuesday, reportedly killing thousands, did not catch everyone by surprise.

In an interview last week for an unrelated story, Robert Yeats, a professor emeritus in geoscience at Oregon State University in Corvallis and co-author of a June 1989 article for Scientific American "Hidden Earthquakes," said that an imminent big west coast earthquake concerned him far less than a "big one" that might occur in Haiti, due to the large fault near the capital city of Port-au-Prince—and the poverty-driven low level of earthquake-preparedness there.

"If they have an earthquake on this fault that runs through Port-au-Prince," the death toll would be tremendous, he said January 6.

PORT-AU-PRINCE: Thousands died in a major earthquake that destroyed the presidential palace, schools, hospitals and hillside shanties in Haiti, the country's president said yesterday, and the US and other nations geared up for a big relief operation.
A five-story UN headquarters building was also brought down by Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake, which the US Geological Survey said was the most powerful in Haiti in over 200 years. Many casualties were feared in the UN building.
President Rene Preval called the damage "unimaginable" and told The Miami Herald he believed thousands were dead in the rubble across the impoverished capital.
He described stepping over dead bodies and hearing the cries of those trapped in the collapsed Parliament building, where the senate president was among those pinned by debris.
"There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them," he said. "All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe."

(CNN) -- The top two civilian officials at the U.N. mission in Haiti were killed in Tuesday's earthquake, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon confirmed Saturday.

Special Representative Hedi Annabi and his deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa, have died, Ban said in a written statement.

Acting U.N. Police Commissioner in Haiti Doug Coates also died, he said.

The headquarters of the U.N. mission in Haiti, a peacekeeping and police force established after the 2004 ouster of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, collapsed during the quake.

Annabi and da Costa had been believed to be trapped under the rubble.

The Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, where many foreigners stay, suffered at least some minor damage.

A group of 12 U.S. students from Lynn University in Florida were visiting Haiti with Food for the Poor and some were able to send text messages to say they were fine, said the charity's spokeswoman Kathy Skipper.

The powerful quake was felt in southeastern Cuba, about 160 miles (257 km) from the epicenter. Cuban authorities evacuated coastal residents because of the initial tsunami threat.

"I was seated on the terrace and I thought my chair had slid out from under me but I realized it was an earthquake," said Eduardo Machin, a resident of the coastal city of Santiago de Cuba. "It was very strong."

Sailors at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in eastern Cuba felt the quake but there was no damage to the base or the detention camp where the United States holds 198 foreign terrorism suspects, said Chief Petty Officer Bill Mesta.

"It just shook a number of the buildings," Mesta said.

Cruise Line Royal Caribbean said initial reports indicated there was no damage to its Labadee beach resort on Haiti's north coast. No ships were in port when the quake hit, the line's spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Raymond Thomas is a jolly man who laughs easily and likes to say "Forget it" a lot.
He'd like to forget the devastation wrought at the Port-au-Prince harbor where his fleet of trucks used to pick up cargo.
Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake sent a quarter-mile pier crumbling into the sea along with two of his trucks. The few workers who went into the water swam to safety, Thomas said, but the port remains shut down, and desperately needed aid cannot be unloaded quickly.
"Now we're just starving to death," he said, worried that the airport and smaller harbors cannot handle the necessary volume of relief supplies.
"That was the whole country right there," he added, pointing at two toppled cranes on the remains of the pier that stand out against the clear-blue sky.

Almost before the aftershocks had died down a major international rescue operation to help the people of Haiti had begun gathering momentum.
China mustered search and rescue teams. An official Chinese newspaper reported that eight of their peace keeping troops in Haiti were dead and ten were missing.
But the disaster has touched all nations. Salvano Briceno in charge of the UN’s Strategy for Disaster Reduction said: “We know the UN building is partially destroyed. Most of the UN staff are accounted for. We’re still waiting to hear for (sic) others, but there is already an operation going on to provide relief, both by the UN, but also in coordination with the major NGOs and governments that are offering assistance.”
At Brignol, French rescue teams were briefed minutes before their flight to the disaster zone.
They have packed specialist equipment to find victims buried under rubble – including heat seeking cameras, sensitive listening devices and sniffer dogs.
And in the United States members of the Los Angeles fire department and search teams from Fairfax County near Washington DC also got ready, waiting for confirmation that the runway at Port au Prince airport was safe enough to land.

These stakeholders will drive the identification, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale employment-generating projects in the five target cities of Port-au-Prince, Gonaives, St Marc, Petit Goave, and Cap Haitien.
The integrated approach will assist an estimated 86,100 people through employment over the life of the program, including at least 1,400 people who will receive their first paycheck within the first 60 days.
The program comes at a critical time, given Haiti’s formal unemployment rate of more than 60%, frequent natural disasters, and lack of basic infrastructure, which have left many struggling to survive. Known for its commitment to stability in fragile states and strong community-based approach, CHF International has already had extensive meetings with government bodies and communities to identify projects that can begin to immediately.
“The linkages this program will create among the private sector, the local authorities, and the communities are pivotal,” said William Holbrook, CHF/Haiti’s Chief of Party for the JOBS Program, who has extensive knowledge of the country. He added, “We are fostering a space in the economy for everyday citizens to participate, reinforcing economic opportunity, which is the country’s best prospect to achieve long-term stability and peace.”
Along with creating employment through key infrastructure projects, the program will leverage private sector resources with workforce development training, to ensure that the program creates and sustains at least 10,000 long-term, durable jobs. CHF’s demand-driven and flexible approach is anticipated to build stability in the five key volatile urban areas through job creation and strategic infrastructure investments that will be operated, maintained and sustained by the Haitian stakeholders, and benefit over 600,000 people.

Emergency Response - Earthquake in Haiti

International Relief Teams' (IRT) initial emergency medical team is deploying to earthquake-stricken Haiti on Saturday, January 16 on the first leg of a 2-week assignment. IRT selected the team based upon their prior experience in working in disasters, either nationally or internationally. The 5-member team of emergency physicians and nurses are taking medical supplies, as well as tents, sleeping bags and other support items, and will be working under very austere conditions.

This is the moment British firefighters rescued a two-year-old girl from the horrors of the Haiti earthquake – after she had been trapped under a collapsed nursery for three days.

As her distraught mother looked on, the workers – part of a team of 61 flown in from the UK – used their bare hands to rip through walls to save little Mia, cutting her pigtails off so they could pull her out through a tiny gap.

How Two US Based Organizations Provided Relief During the Winter Storm Devastation in China

The winter storms that hit China at the end of January were the worst in five decades and caused deaths, structural collapse, blackouts, water shortages, and livestock and crop losses in 21 provinces and municipalities in China. It also created a transport and energy systems crisis. Heavy snow storm and power failures caused train delays and stranded thousands of people during the peak travel season.
Two organizations, Give2Asia and Half the Sky Foundation immediately responded by creating emergency funds to assist those in need. These organizations are based here in the US with many Asian and non-Asian American supporters.

Give2Asia's Disaster Relief Fund was created "to provide disaster areas with immediate relief, including urgently needed food, medicine, quilts, winter coats, and other supplies, as well as long-term reconstruction, including rebuilding of homes and economic recovery."
Half the Sky Foundation created the Little Mouse Emergency to help their orphanage facilities purchase supplies to get through the disaster. They raised almost $700,000 for the fund.

Jenny Bowen, Executive Director of Half the Sky Foundation writes, "(I)f there are funds left over when the weather clears and services are restored, we will take the balance and help each site establish a store of emergency provisions so that this never happens again."
